Species

What grows here, and how it burns

Heat is roughly a function of density — heavier wood, more BTUs per cord. But the wood that gives the most heat is usually the wood that takes longest to dry, which is the whole trade-off.

Black locust Highest 12–18 mo Burns almost like coal and rot-resistant enough to sit in a stack for years. Splits ugly. If you find some, keep it.
Sugar maple High 9–12 mo Excellent all-around firewood. Good heat, splits clean, dries faster than oak. Red maple is a step down but perfectly usable.
Ash High 6–9 mo The best-behaved firewood there is. Starts at roughly half the water content of red oak straight off the stump, splits like it wants to, burns clean. Emerald ash borer has killed enormous numbers of NJ ash, so there's a lot of it around right now.
Beech / birch Good 9–12 mo Good heat. Birch bark lights easily and the wood is pretty in an open fireplace, but it rots fast if you leave it on the ground.
Black cherry Moderate 6–7 mo Moderate heat, wonderful smell, dries quickly — measured to burnable in six or seven months here. A favorite for open fireplaces and for smoking poultry and pork.
Sweetgum / poplar / sycamore Low 6–9 mo Light, fast, gone. Fine for a shoulder-season fire or a fire pit, not what you want for overnight heat. Sweetgum splits like it has a grudge.
Pine / cedar / spruce Low 3–6 mo Great kindling, bad firewood. Burns fast and hot with a lot of sparks, and unseasoned softwood is the fastest way to line a chimney with creosote. We don't sell it as firewood.

On the seasoning column. Cherry, hickory and black locust figures come from University of Maryland Extension's measured drying study (FS-1074) — same climate as ours. Oak times come from the same study's expectation plus independent moisture logs of red oak in Pennsylvania. Ash and maple numbers are trade practice, not extension-measured, and we'll say so rather than dress them up.

Seasoning

What “seasoned” is supposed to mean

Fresh-cut wood is somewhere between a third and four-fifths water by weight, depending on species. Red oak comes off the stump at about 80% moisture content on the oven-dry scale; white ash at roughly 46%. That's why ash has a reputation for burning green and oak doesn't.

The EPA's guidance is under 20% moisture, measured on a freshly split face with a pin meter, and at minimum six months of drying to get there. Cornell, Illinois and West Virginia extension services all land on the same 20% figure.

Getting there needs four things and only four: split, stacked off the ground, air on all sides, and top covered. Splitting is the big one — the same oak left in rounds for a year loses roughly half as much moisture as oak that was split and stacked.

And it isn't linear. That Pennsylvania red oak log dropped nine points in its first five months and only three and a half over the next five. The last stretch to 20% is the slow part, which is exactly the stretch most sellers skip.

How to check it yourself

This is the same method we use on our own stacks — here's exactly how we do it and what goes on your ticket.

Buy a meter

A decent pin-type moisture meter runs about $38. Split a piece open, press the pins into the fresh inside face across the grain, and read it. Testing the outside of a split tells you about the weather, not the wood.

Or read the wood

Seasoned wood is gray-brown and checked with cracks radiating from the center, noticeably lighter than it looks, and two pieces knocked together give a sharp crack rather than a dull thud. Bark comes loose. None of this is as good as a meter.

Or watch it burn

Wet wood hisses, bubbles moisture out the end grain, blackens your glass within minutes and needs constant fussing with the air control. If your fire only stays lit when the door is cracked, the wood is wet.

Storage

Where to put it once it's yours

Do

  • Get it off the ground. Pallets, 4×4s, a rack — anything. Wood sitting on dirt wicks moisture up and rots from the bottom.
  • Cover the top only. A tarp over the top 12–18 inches, sides wide open.
  • Single rows if you can, with a gap between them, running the length of the prevailing wind.
  • Sun and wind beat shade every time. A sunny fence line dries wood faster than a shed.
  • Bring in a few days' worth at a time and let it warm up indoors before burning.

Don't

  • Don't tarp the whole pile. A wrapped stack is a compost pile. It traps moisture instead of shedding it and the wood will be wetter in spring than it was in fall.
  • Don't stack against the house. Carpenter ants, termites, mice and the occasional snake. Keep it 20 feet out if you can.
  • Don't store a season's worth indoors. Whatever is living in the wood comes in with it.
  • Don't stack it in the woods where nothing gets sun or moving air.
  • Don't burn anything painted, treated, painted-over, or salvaged from a pallet. Pressure-treated wood puts arsenic compounds and worse into your house.

Cooking & smoking

Wood for food

Different job, different rules. Cooking wood needs to be drier than heating wood, bark off, and split small — and it must be clean hardwood, period.

Never cook over: any softwood (pine, spruce, fir, cedar — resin makes food taste like turpentine), anything painted, stained, glued or pressure treated, pallet wood, driftwood, or wood with mold on it. Oleander, yew and laurel are genuinely toxic. If you don't know what it is, don't cook on it.

Safety

The short list that actually matters

Get the chimney swept every year

Once a year if you burn regularly, and get it inspected before the first fire of the season if the house is new to you. Creosote is the tar that condenses out of wood smoke, and it is flammable — a chimney fire is a chimney fire because the deposits themselves ignite. Burning wet wood accelerates the buildup dramatically, which is the practical reason moisture content matters as much as it does.

Working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, on every level

New Jersey requires both. A wood stove or fireplace with a blocked or leaking flue is exactly the scenario a CO alarm exists for, and CO gives you no warning of its own. Test them at the start of burning season.

Never use accelerant to start a fire

No gasoline, no charcoal lighter fluid, no kerosene, ever, in a fireplace or stove. Kindling, a fire starter and a match. If you can't get a fire going with those, the wood is wet — adding gasoline doesn't fix wet wood, it just adds a fireball.

Ashes stay hot for days

Metal can with a lid, on concrete or bare dirt, well away from the house, deck and anything that burns. Not a plastic bin, not a cardboard box, not the garage. Give it several days before disposal. Coals buried in ash can reignite 72 hours later and routinely do.

Build fires small and hot, not big and smoldering

A hot, well-supplied fire burns the smoke instead of depositing it. Damping a big load down to smolder overnight feels efficient and is the single best way to coat a flue in creosote. Screen on the fireplace, door closed on the stove, and nothing flammable within three feet.

Don't move firewood far

Every county in New Jersey sits inside the spotted lanternfly quarantine zone, and firewood is one of the main ways destructive insects travel — emerald ash borer got across the country largely by riding in campfire wood. New Jersey asks that wood be burned within 50 miles of where it was cut. Buy it where you burn it.
